Stanley Paterson Research Fellowship – Call for Entries 2024

BACKGROUND 

The Stanley Paterson Research Fellowship honors Stanley Paterson, a founding member of the Friends, author of The Ice King: Frederick Tudor, Merchant Prince of Boston: Colonel T. H. Perkins, 1764-1854, Nahant: On the Rocks, in addition to researching and editing two unpublished volumes of annotated transcriptions of Henry Longfellow’s diaries.

PURPOSE 

The Friends of Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters are now accepting applications for the 2024 Stanley Paterson Research Fellowship.

The Paterson Fellowship advances and supports scholarly research and projects using the archives and collections at Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site (NHS), located at 105 Brattle Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

AWARD 

The Fellowship consists of a stipend of $1,600. Payment will be made in two installments: $1,000 upon award and $600 upon submission of report and/or article by June 3, 2025.

SELECTION CRITERIA 

Preference will be given to applicants whose research plan makes maximum use of the Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters NHS archives and collections.  Applications will be reviewed by members of the board of Friends of Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters, staff of Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site and selected scholars.

WHO SHOULD APPLY 

Students and professionals engaged in history, literature, art history, architecture, American studies, international studies, or related disciplines. Prospective applicants are strongly urged to contact the Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters NHS archivist, Kate Hanson Plass (LONG_archives@nps.gov) to discuss the fit between their proposed projects and the materials available in the collection.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or already hold the J-1 or F-1 visa (or equivalent documents) and a U.S. taxpayer identification number. 

REQUIREMENTS 

The fellowship recipient is expected to be conducting research at the Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site (as well as related archives in the Cambridge/Boston area) for at least a two-week period from May 2024 through April 2025.

The fellowship recipient will submit a report and/or article to the Friends summarizing their research method, the findings in report and or article form by June 3, 2025.

In addition, the Friends Board asks fellowship recipients to share their findings publicly through a format to be mutually agreed upon, such as a public talk or a short article for publication on the Friends and National Park Service websites by April 2026.
